North Hollywood
Home to the NoHo Arts District, North Hollywood is an eclectic neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley that borders Burbank and Sherman Oaks. Located 10 minutes north of Hollywood, these two neighborhoods are divided by more than just mountains. While Hollywood is known for glitz, glamour, and movie stars, North Hollywood has a more down-to-earth vibe. Rather than movie screens, North Hollywood’s claim to fame is in its live theatre, art galleries, and comedy shows. This distinctly bohemian neighborhood has been growing in popularity in recent years, especially when the North Hollywood Station opened in 2000, giving residents subway access to Downtown Los Angeles.
Known for its art scene, this lively neighborhood is home to many comedy clubs and theaters. Within the town’s one-square-mile center, there are more than 20 professional theatres. North Hollywood is also home to Universal Studios, one of California’s most famous movie studios. Other area highlights include:
- Griffith Park - a large municipal park located in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. It has some of the most extensive hiking trails in the San Fernando Valley. Home to the Griffith Observatory.
- Hollywood Burbank Airport - while it’s lesser-known than LAX, Hollywood Burbank Airport is considered one of the best airports in the U.S. It’s also much more convenient if you live north of Los Angeles.
- The Federal Bar - a gastropub housed in a 1920’s-era bank; has two distinct vibes–a speakeasy on the main floor and a nightclub on the second floor.
- Art Deco Lankershim Arts Center - home to the award-winning Road Theatre Company, this landmark theater is one of the most famous performing arts centers in North Hollywood.
- Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery - an underrated landmark near Burbank. This park has a memorial for Amelia Earhart and other aviation pioneers.
